Towards an Ontological Theory of Physical Objects

چکیده
We present a logical theory based on a fundamental distinction between objects and their substrates, i.e. chunks of matter and regions of space, whose purpose is to establish the basis of a general ontology of space, matter and physical objects for the domain of mechanical artifacts. An extensional mereological framework is assumed for substrates, while physical objects are allowed to change their spatial and material substrate while keeping their identity. Besides the parthood relation, simple self-connected regions and congruence are adopted as primitives for the description of space. Only tridimensional regions are assumed in the domain.

An Ontological Theory of Physical Objects
We discuss an approach to a theory of physical objects and present a logical theory based on a fundamental distinction between objects and their substrates, i.e . chunks of matter and regions of space . The purpose is to establish the basis of a general ontology of space, matter and physical objects for the domain of mechanical artifacts . An extensional mereological framework is assumed for su...
متن کاملProperties are Potatoes?: An essay on ontological parsimony
The cost/benefit analysis is standard fare in contemporary ontology: we measure how a theory performs along a variety of dimensions (simplicity, coherence with intuitions etc.) and then – having completed this for all theories currently being evaluated – we opt for the theory that has, overall, the best cost-benefit profile. §1 is a more detailed exposition of this methodology. One of those the...
متن کاملA Spatio-Temporal Theory of Physical Objects
We intend to introduce and characterize by means of logical axioms the basic ontological distinctions needed to reason about physical objects. The main distinction we make is between objects and their substrates matter, the regions of space they occupy and free space. Thereafter, taking space-time as a primitive, we present a spatiotemporal theory of physical objects. keywords : Spatio-Temporal...
متن کاملEmpirical Equivalence, Scientific Realism and String Theory
The phenomenon of duality in string theory provides an example of the underdetermination of the theoretical scheme by all possible empirical data. Empirically equivalent theories which arise due to string dualities differ in essential characteristics like the dimension and the topological position of their elementary objects and the form and dimensionality of spacetime. The obvious ontological ...
متن کاملFour Theses on the Alleged Innocence of Mereology*
In Parts of Classes David Lewis attempts to draw a sharp contrast between mereology and set theory and he tries to assimilate mereology to logic. For him, like logic but unlike set theory, mereology is “ontologically innocent”. In mereology, given certain objects, no further ontological commitment is required for the existence of their sum. On the contrary, by accepting set theory, given certai...
